"Winter, A View from the Attic"
"Winter, A View from the Attic"
John grew up in Lemington & lived there for most of his adult life, until his death in 2017. He painted this view from the attic window of his home many times over the years. The view shows the cooling towers of Stella North Power Station - one of two which straddled the River Tyne as it wound it’s way past Newburn and Lemington and on down to Tynemouth. Stella North was built on the site of the old Lemington Hall and the two stations provided power for many of the local homes and heavy industries in Northumberland, Durham and Tyne & Wear while they were in operation from the mid 1950s until they were decommissioned in 1991. John’s later paintings don’t include the cooling towers as they were blown up in 1992 during one of the many stages of the demolition of both power stations which took place throughout the 1990s.
